Biography
I create music around narratives, blending acoustic, visual and theatrical elements into what has been described as sound scenography or sonic theatre: different forms of sound manipulation, usually joined by movement, objects or digital media, building abstract worlds that can be experienced before fully understood (‘enough to open a corridor between ‘standard’ music-music, and non-standard music-theatre‘).
Most of my acoustic and notated compositions lean into theatrical experimentation, such as the miniature opera Mirror, mirror on the wall (Tête à Tête), where musicians are equally actors, or Gluttony, an instrumental-theatre work for flutes, percussion and the bottle-phone (an instrument I designed). My larger-scale projects extend further into interdisciplinary collaboration, combining music with dance, theatre, puppetry, video, and design. Examples include the shadow puppetry production Music Impossible (LSO St.Lukes), and Sisyphus Distressing (Cafe OTO), a multimedia sonic-theatre work after Camus (‘a totally unique examination of Sisyphus’ plight‘).
More recently my practice has turned towards live creation and improvisation, exploring the physical fragility of various analogue, digital and self-built instruments/sound sources. Close partnerships with theatre and dance artists and visual designers have produced DiStorSion (dance & multimedia, RAIF), Electra UNTITLED and An Ice Thing To Say (physical theatre, The Vaults/Arcola), Recycled Sounds (community project), Hestia (collaborative composition, nonclassical/The state51 Conspiracy/Gaudeamus) and don’t shoot, it’s just me (video).
Notable performances of my earlier concert works include Fear (not) by ensemble WienBerlin at the Wiener Konzerthaus, The Black Art of Obscurantism performed by Olly Coates at the Southbank Centre (a London Sinfonietta commission), the opera The Darkness of Mistico at the Greek National Opera House, and the video-infused Sisyphus Victimised, premiered by the London Symphony Orchestra. DIY 1: the pianist & the lamp, played by Philip Thomas at Kings Place, was reviewed as ‘underlining music’s potential closeness to performance art’.
I co-founded and co-direct the Metapraxis Ensemble with Myrto Loulaki, curating and producing interdisciplinary events that place older and new music alongside other art forms.
Teaching and public engagement run alongside my creative work, from creative learning and outreach programmes to MUSIC:BUILDING, a composition project linking music-making with architecture.
